Far Flung Tour to Northport and Beyond

Buckle up for one of the most scenic and adventurous routes Wander with Direction offers.
This 6-hour journey winds through the northern reaches of the Leelanau Peninsula, where at some point you’re sure to find yourself driving along the sparkling blue shores of Grand Traverse Bay. With each turn, this tour brings something new: a mix of history, nature, small-town charm, and just the right amount of wine tasting and beachcombing.
Stop 1Leelanau Cellars
Your first stop is the quaint town of Omena, where you’ll visit the Leelanau Cellars Tasting Room. Set right on the bay, this tasting room offers a panoramic view of the water as you sample from their wide selection of approachable, fruit-forward wines. It’s the perfect spot to ease into the day, soaking up the peaceful vibe and maybe even picking up a bottle or two for later.
Stop 2Grand Traverse Lighthouse
Next, continue north until the road can take you no farther—literally. At the tip of the peninsula sits the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, a beautifully preserved historic site nestled in Leelanau State Park. Take time to soak in the view of Lake Michigan and explore the museum exhibits, and walk shoreline that surround this windswept point.
Stop 3Northport
After soaking in the history and scenery, head south to the town of Northport, a quiet harbor village with a welcoming, artsy energy. Stop in at the New Bohemian Café for dynamite sandwich, or grab a table at Mitten Brewing Company for local craft brews and hearty fare. Either option gives you a satisfying taste of this cozy corner of the peninsula.
Stop 4Christmas Cove Beach
Next up is a peaceful nature break and a bit of adventure at Christmas Cove Beach. This secluded shoreline is a great spot for Petoskey stone hunting, and whether or not you find the famous fossilized coral, you’ll enjoy the rocky shoreline, lake breeze, and peaceful surroundings. Bring water shoes if you have them—wading in to search the shallows can be part of the fun.
Stop 5Dune Bird Winery
Wrap up the tour with a visit to Dune Winery, located just north of Leland. This final stop is a serene, tucked-away gem with views of the surrounding hills and rows of vines stretching across the landscape. Relax with a glass of wine in hand, reflect on the day’s discoveries, and toast to the beauty of Leelanau’s farthest corners.
Estimated Time of Tour: 6+ Hours
