Watercolor Postcards: Southern Chronicles Series

Watercolor Postcard Series: Southern Chronicles

The idea for the Watercolor Postcard: Southern Chronicles Series came while planning a road trip in early 2022. If you know me at all, you know I love to travel. With pandemic fatigue and a Northern Michigan winter setting in, I had a fierce case of cabin fever. Since April of 2020, when the world shut down, my husband and I had been laying low at home in Northern Michigan—it was time to get out. In an effort to avoid COVID-rich environments, we didn’t want to fly or stay at a resort, so we decided to take a seven-week road trip through the South while working remotely and staying at Airbnbs.

Before we took off, I prepped a traveling art bag full of art supplies and pre-cut postcard-sized papers. Watercolors were relatively easy to travel with. I created artwork all along the way and mailed them to people as postcards. Most of them made it to their destination, though I know of one that sadly got “lost in the mail.” I posted the paintings on Instagram and Facebook, hoping to offer my friends and family something different to look at on social media—something lighter than pandemic stats.

My husband and I hiked and chased waterfalls in North Georgia, discovered the beauty of the coastal wetlands from South Carolina to North Florida, soaked up sunrises and sunsets along the way, and explored cities like Savannah and New Orleans. As usual, I focused on the natural beauty of the landscapes we found. Below is a selection of the postcard paintings from the Southern Chronicles Series.
